Australia is introducing important changes to the Student Visa (Subclass 500) rules, effective from 2 October 2026. If you are planning to study in Australia, or you are already there on a Student Visa, please understand the new rules before you enrol, travel or apply for a visa.
1. Applying for a Student Visa from inside Australia
Most temporary visa holders can no longer apply for a Student Visa while they are in Australia, unless they fall into one of the exemption categories listed below.
2. Further Student Visa
Current Student Visa holders who wish to remain in Australia to continue studying must check the new criteria and make sure they meet the updated requirements.
3. Family members and dependants
A partner and dependent children can no longer normally be included in a Student Visa application. Current Student Visa holders should check whether they are affected and explore other visa options for their family.
Key exemptions include
- PhD students
- DFAT / Defence sponsored students
- Foreign government scholarship holders
- Eligible students from Pacific and ASEAN countries
- Certain students progressing to a higher AQF level
- Other specified exemptions
